Total Knee Replacement (Mini-Incision Method)

Overview

This surgery fixes a damaged or worn-out knee. It uses implants to let your knee move naturally again.

Preparation

To begin, you're put to sleep. The surgeon makes an incision in your knee. It's smaller than the one used in traditional surgery, which helps your recovery. Your kneecap is moved aside to expose your joint.

Reshaping the bones

The damaged parts of the femur and tibia bones are removed. The ends of the bones are shaped to fit the new metal parts.

Implants

Then, the implants are put into your knee. A special plastic insert attaches to the tibial part. The parts are tested to make sure they fit together perfectly. Your new knee will support your weight and glide smoothly as you walk. Finally, your incision is closed and bandaged.

End of procedure

After the surgery, you are watched in a recovery room as you wake up. Your surgeon will tell you when you can go home. Follow your surgeon's advice for a safe recovery.
