Skin Cyst

Overview

This is a harmless lump that forms beneath the surface of your skin. It's filled with a thick, pasty substance. A skin cyst usually isn't painful, but it can become sore if it gets infected.

Causes

What causes a skin cyst? Many are linked to a problem with the cells on the surface of your skin that produce keratin. That's a protein that makes your skin strong and flexible. Sometimes the skin cells that make keratin move deeper into your skin. They multiply and form a sac, and then release keratin into it. This creates the lump you can see and feel.

Symptoms

What are the symptoms? There are different types of skin cysts, and they have different characteristics. But in general, a skin cyst looks like a small, flash-colored lump in your skin. Skin cysts can form anywhere, but one of the most common types is usually found on the face, neck, shoulders and the skin around the genitals. Cysts are also common on the scalp.

Treatment

How do we treat a skin cyst? Unless it's causing pain or some other issue, a small cyst usually doesn't need to be treated. It may go away on its own over time. If you want to have a cyst drained or removed, a doctor can do that with a simple procedure. Keep in mind that skin cancer and other serious issues are sometimes mistaken for a skin cyst. So if you're unsure about a lump in your skin, always have it looked at by a doctor.
