Seborrheic Keratosis

Overview

These noncancerous, wart-like growths form on the skin, sometimes in patches. They're most common in older people.

Causes

What causes them? We don't know, exactly. In some people, they seem to be linked to a family history. So we think genes may play a role.

Symptoms

What are the symptoms? These small, round or oval growths affect the outermost layer of your skin. They range in color from tan to black. They can feel rough or scaly, and they can be slightly raised from your skin. We often see them on the head, neck, back or chest. They can form quickly, and they may itch. And if your clothes rub against them or if you pick at them, they may bleed.

Treatment

How do we treat them? These growths are harmless, and they usually don't need treatment. But you may not like the way they look or feel. If so, there are a few ways we can remove them. Your doctor will create a plan that's right for you.
