Schizoid Personality Disorder

Overview

This is a mental health disorder. If you have it, you aren't interested in relationships with others. You don't form close bonds with other people, even with members of your own family. This can lead to social isolation.

Causes

We don't know what causes this disorder. Several factors may be involved. It may be linked to your genes. It may be linked to the way your brain works, and to things you experienced in childhood.

Symptoms

If you have schizoid personality disorder, you are indifferent to others. Praise doesn't make you happy, and you don't really care about criticism. People describe you as cold, distant and detached. You don't enjoy close relationships with anyone. You don't want to be a part of a family. And, you may have little or no interest in sex. You avoid social activities where you are expected to interact with others emotionally. Instead, you choose activities you can do alone.

Treatment

This disorder is difficult to treat. In many cases, people who have it don't seek treatment. Long-term, specialized talk therapy can help, but it can be hard for a person with this disorder to form a connection with a therapist. Some people may benefit from medications.
