Revision Hip Surgery

Overview

This surgery treats an artificial hip that has become infected or has begun to wear out. During this surgery, worn and damaged parts of your artificial hip are removed and replaced with new parts.

Preparation

To begin, we give you medicine to put you to sleep. We make an incision to reach your hip joint. We check your joint for signs of disease and wear.

Removing damaged parts

Next, we remove any parts of your implant that are causing problems (note that we may leave any parts that are still working well). Some of your bone may need to be cut to do this. We may need to trim away scar tissue and old bone cement. If you have a bone infection, the infected parts of the bone may be removed, too. For a bad infection, we may need to stop here. You'll come back again for a second surgery after your bone has had time to heal.

Implanting new parts

Finally, we implant the new artificial hip components. There are many styles of implants. You and your surgeon will have chosen the type that's right for you.

End of procedure

When the surgery is done, we close and bandage your incision. We watch you as you wake up. Follow your care plan for a safe recovery.
