Quadriplegia (Tetraplegia)

Overview

This is paralysis of your body below your neck. With it, you may not be able to feel or move any part of your body from your neck down.

Causes

Why does it happen? It's linked to a problem with the spinal cord or brain. Most often, it's caused by a severe neck injury that injures your spinal cord. But other issues can cause it, too. A tumor, cyst, infection, blood flow disruption, or some other problem can harm your spinal cord. It can be caused by a brain injury. And some conditions that affect your nervous system can cause it.

Symptoms

What are the symptoms? Well, symptoms vary from person to person. If no nerve signals are able to travel through your spinal cord, you won't be able to feel anything or move any muscles below your neck. And your brain won't be able to control automatic processes. These are things like your breathing, bowels and bladder. But if some nerve signals can pass through, you may have some limited feeling and movement. And your brain may be able to control these automatic processes. If your paralysis was caused by a neck injury, the place on your neck where you were hurt can be a factor.

Treatment

How do we treat it? First, you may need surgery to stabilize or relieve pressure on your spine. But in most cases, we can't cure this type of paralysis. So we focus on ongoing care and helping you learn to adapt. Things like electric wheelchairs and voice-controlled devices can help you in your daily life. Over time, rehab may help you regain some feeling and movement. And some of your symptoms can be managed with medications. Your doctor will create a care plan that's right for you.
