Ommaya Reservoir Placement

Overview

This surgery puts a small reservoir under your scalp. It's connected to a tube we call a "catheter." Through it, we can inject medicine into your brain. We can also remove extra fluid.

Preparation

To begin, you're put to sleep and your head is secured. We make a curved incision in your scalp. We make a small pocket between your skin and skull for the reservoir. We also make a small opening in your skull for the catheter.

Inserting the reservoir

Now, we carefully pass the catheter through the brain to a ventricle. That's a fluid-filled space. With the system in place, fluid flows between the brain and the reservoir.

End of procedure

Finally, we close your incision. After the surgery, you're monitored in a recovery room. You'll stay in the hospital until it's safe for you to go home. Follow your surgeon's instructions as you heal.
