Medical Treatment in the Emergency Room

Overview

You're in the ER, and we've examined you and made a care plan. Now it's time for treatment. What can you expect?

Simple issues

Treatment in the ER can look different for different people, depending on the issue we're treating. Some problems are treated fairly quickly and easily. We can suture a cut, or put a splint on a broken bone. Then we'll send you home to heal. But not all issues are so simple.

More serious issues

If you have a more serious issue, treatment can be more involved. You may need to see a specialist. And that might mean a longer visit. You may also need more extensive tests. We may need to observe you for a period of time. We may need to transfer you to another care facility. And for certain problems, we may need to admit you to the hospital. That means you'll stay in the hospital overnight or longer so we can give you the best care. You may need to have someone you know bring you clothes and other items so you'll be comfortable during your stay.

Followup care

And as part of your care plan, we may need to schedule followup visits. These could be with your primary care doctor or with a specialist. Followup visits let us make sure your care plan is working. We may need to do more tests or try other types of treatment. A doctor will give you more info about your care plan.
