Keeping Your Bones Healthy

Overview

Your skeleton is the framework that supports your body. Your bones protect your organs and store minerals. The marrow inside your bones is where blood cells develop and are stored. We want to keep your bones healthy and strong. Let's look at some simple ways you can do that.

Well-balanced diet

First, know that nutrition plays a big role in your bone health. Strive for a well-balanced diet that's rich in calcium and vitamin D. Calcium is a mineral that gives your bones strength. And vitamin D helps you absorb the calcium that's in your diet. Some good sources of calcium include dairy products, tofu, green leafy vegetables and things like orange juice that contain added calcium. Some good sources of vitamin D include fatty fish, beef liver, egg yolks and cheese. And ask your doctor about taking calcium and vitamin D supplements.

Exercise

Next, make sure you stay active. Focus on strength-building and weight-bearing exercises. These include things like lifting weights, walking and dancing. Aim for at least 30 minutes of exercise every day.

Avoid smoking and alcohol

Let's talk about a few things you know are bad for you: smoking and alcohol. Both can harm your bones. So if you smoke, quit. And if you drink alcohol, limit how often and how much you drink.

Seniors

And finally, know that bones tend to get weaker as we get older. Seniors, especially women, have a higher risk for a disease called "osteoporosis." With it, your bones are more likely to break. So if you're a senior, take your bone health seriously. Talk to your doctor about a bone density test, which shows the strength of your bones. And always be careful to avoid falls. For more info, talk to your doctor.
