Internal Screw Fixation for Slipped Capital Femoral Epiphysis (SCFE)

This surgery treats a femoral head (the ball of your long leg bone) that's slipping off its neck. The head is stabilized with surgical screws. Here's how it's done.

Preparation

To begin, you're put to sleep. An incision is made in your thigh to reach your femur.

Stabilization

Next, the surgeon stabilizes the ball of the femur with one or more surgical screws. Holes are drilled into the neck and ball of the femur. Screws are threaded into these holes. The screws stop the slipping.

End of procedure

When the surgery is done, the incision is closed. You're watched in a recovery room for a brief time. Follow your surgeon's tips as you heal.
