Hysteroscopy (In-Office Method)

Overview

This procedure uses a device called a "hysteroscope" to see and treat issues in your womb. With hysteroscopy, we can examine your womb to find the cause of abnormal bleeding or pregnancy issues. We can take tissue samples. We can treat or remove things like fibroids, polyps and scar tissue. And we can place or remove a birth control device.

Preparation

To begin, you lie on an exam table that supports your legs and feet. You may be given medicine to make you feel relaxed and numb. We carefully place a device called a "speculum" into your vagina. The speculum holds your vagina open so we can reach your cervix. That's the lower part of your womb. We may also need to enlarge the opening in the center of your cervix. We do this with a thin rod called a "dilator."

Exam

Now we guide the hysteroscope through your vagina and cervix. The hysteroscope is a thin tube with a light and a camera. It shows the inside of your womb on a monitor. It also has a space that we can pass things through. We send air or fluid through the hysteroscope to expand your womb so we can see more clearly. We may just need to examine your womb to make sure it's healthy. Or, we may need to treat one or more issues. If so, we can do what's needed with tiny instruments we pass through the hysteroscope.

Conclusion

When we're done, we watch you for a brief time, then you can go home. Follow your care tips for a safe recovery. We'll follow up with you soon about any next steps we need to take.
