Many people don't realize that women and men often experience heart attack differently. We tend to think of a heart attack as a dramatic, chest-clutching event. But for many women, the signs are more subtle. Some women may mistake them for symptoms of heartburn, the flu, or aging. This can be dangerous.
For both women and men, a heart attack can cause discomfort in the center or left side of your chest. But some women may instead have discomfort in the lower chest or upper abdomen. You may feel pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain. You may mistake it for heartburn. It usually lasts for more than a few minutes, and it may come and go.
Women are a bit more likely than men to have other symptoms. Many have shortness of breath. This can happen when you are active or resting. Many women have nausea and vomiting. Some have back, shoulder or jaw pain. A woman having a heart attack may feel unusually tired. This feeling can last for days.
Other signs of heart attack include pain in one or both arms. The upper part of your stomach may hurt. You may break out in a cold sweat, and you may feel lightheaded or dizzy.
If you think you're having a heart attack, act fast. Call for help immediately. It could save your life.
