Glaucoma (Open-Angle Type)

Overview

This condition results from a buildup of pressure inside your eye. It develops slowly. Most people don't realize they have a problem until their vision is harmed.

Cause

We don't know the exact cause of open-angle glaucoma. It's linked to a problem with the eye's drainage canals. They are found around the outer edge the iris. When the canals don't work properly, fluid pressure builds in the eye. It usually happens gradually. But as pressure builds, it pushes harmfully against the optic nerve. It can cause permanent damage.

Symptoms

Open-angle glaucoma causes loss of side vision. If it's not treated, it can lead to loss of central vision and even blindness.

Treatment

Treatment usually includes eye drops and medications to lower the pressure. You may need a procedure to open the drains in your eye. Your doctor will create a care plan that's right for you.
