This is a diagnostic test. It measures the electrical impulses in your brain. It can help identify abnormal brain activity.
In preparation for this test, several electrodes are placed on your scalp. These are metal discs that can detect electrical signals. They can be attached to your skin with adhesive, or they can be attached to a cap that you wear on your head. The electrodes are connected to a computer that records your brain activity.
During the test, you relax and listen as a technician gives you verbal instructions. You may be asked to close your eyes. You may be asked to read or to think of certain things. You may be asked to look at pictures or flashing lights. These tasks all stimulate your brain in different ways. They help show how your brain responds to stimuli. You may be recorded with a video camera while you perform the test to capture your physical responses, too.
After the test, your data is analyzed and interpreted. Your healthcare provider can discuss your results with you during a followup appointment.
