Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery)

Overview

This surgery treats eyelids that are droopy or baggy. It gets rid of extra tissue that forms around your eyes as you age. It also opens eyelids that hide your eyes. It can help you look healthier and more alert.

Preparation

To begin, you're given medicine to make you feel numb and relaxed. You may be put to sleep.

Upper eyelid

If you're having surgery on both upper and lower eyelids, the upper one is usually done first. An incision is made along your eyelid's natural crease. Excess fat in your eyelid is removed or repositioned. The muscle of your eyelid may need to be modified. Sagging skin may be removed, too. Then, the upper incision is closed.

Lower eyelid

For your lower eyelid, an incision is made just below your lower lashes. Your surgeon will adjust any fat, muscle and sagging skin under your eye. Finally, the lower incision is closed.

End of procedure

After the surgery is done, you are watched for a brief time in a recovery room. Follow your doctor's instructions for a safe recovery.
