Argon Laser Trabeculoplasty (ALT) for Glaucoma

Overview

This laser treatment fixes the drainage canals around the outer edge of the iris. It helps them drain more fluid from your eye so harmful pressure doesn't build up.

Preparation

To begin, your eye is numbed with drops. A lens placed on your eye will help direct the laser light.

Laser treatment

The doctor shines the laser into your eye at the drainage canals. Specific spots are treated around the iris. The laser stimulation helps the canals drain fluid more effectively. This lowers pressure in your eye.

After the procedure

After the procedure, your eye may be irritated, and your vision may be blurry. Medicated eyedrops will prevent infection and reduce the swelling. You'll need followup appointments to check the pressure in your eye. You may need more than one treatment. Follow your doctor's care plan.
