Ankle Nerve Block

Overview

This is a series of numbing injections that block sensation in your foot and ankle. We most often use this to prepare you for foot surgery.

Preparation

To begin, we may give you medicine to help you relax. We look closely at the anatomy of your ankle to find the nerves we want to numb. We may draw some marks on your skin when we've found the right spots.

Numbing the nerve

Now, we give you a series of anesthetic injections. Each one numbs a different nerve. We'll treat all the nerves needed to keep you pain free during your surgery. This may involve four to five nerves.

End of procedure

When we're done, your foot will be numb for several hours. The numbness may even last a day or two. Follow your care instructions for a safe recovery.
